Buying a houseboat

Has anyone ever bought one or knows someone who lives on one. I am thinking of buying a houseboat and would like to hear some pros and cons.
I like the idea of buying one, doing it up and living there

Only joking. I can't say a narrow boat appeals to me, but a mate owns a glorious houseboat in the Netherlands. I'd move there in a heartbeat.

A mate of mine bought one in order to save money after he broke up with his missus. Now lives on it and goes up and down the Stort and Lea. He really enjoys the lifestyle BUT he is an incredibly practical Aussie brought up in the outback with a lifetime of acquiring outdoorsy skills PLUS he is a professional carpenter, joiner and all-round house renovator. He's done all the work on his boat himself, including fitting a woodburner and overhauling the plumbing, electrics and heating.
If you're not that type of character with a majority of those skills I'd give it a swerve.
Also bear in mind that if you want to save money on a permanent mooring then you need to be moving every two weeks at the most. Parking space anxiety is a thing.

I know someone who lives in one near Hampton Court, said it was all he could afford after the divorce. There are pitfalls as been said, heating, rats, headroom if barge, confined space, short expensive leases. Probably more enjoyable as a weekend retreat if you have the funds, I knew someone who did that with a boat moored in Brighton marina they used to stay on at weekends.

Make sure wjatwver you buy will fit the mooring you're thinking of.
Check cosys of insurance licences etc
Careful buying used. If 10 plus yrs especially. How often has the bottom been maintained (badically repainted).
f you are handy consider getting a steel shell built for you then fit it all yourself.
This will mean transport into the water sometime and getting engine fitted.
Can you live in a space 6 ft wide by 70 long at macimum?

A friend had been looking for ages to buy one, found a nearly new one he liked but missed out to someone else. A few months later it was up for sale again this time he managed to buy it. Him and my other mate went up to Cambridge to collect it, buy the time they had got to London after going through a hundred locks he had enough and decided to sell it. He had to go all the way back to Cambridge to sell it back to the dealer, and lost a quick 3 grand in the process.
